Children, Nuns & Tutors Sponsorship Program

As part of the rehabilitation effort for Cyclone Nargis, FFM identified a need to initiate the children sponsorship program for Myanmar. Subsequently,

opportunities arise in other countries - Bangladesh and Bhutan. Below provide more on the intent and scope of each program.

FFM also expanded beyond children sponsorship and initiated the Laos Tutor support subsidy program as well.

Myanmar Children Sponsorship Programme
缅甸儿童赞助计划

This sponsorship programme is in support of children who come from extremely poor families who are unable to support their livelihood and education as well as children who were orphaned by Cyclone Nagis which hit Myanmar in May 2008 and was the worst natural disaster recorded in Myanmar causing catastrophic destruction with some 138,000 fatalities reported. The Children’s Hostel located in Shwegyin is managed by Parahita (Charitable) Monastery.

The sponsorship programme started in March 2009 with 50 children and has increased to 150 children in 2014. The sponsorships are available for renewal annually.

Bhutan Nuns Sponsorship Programme
不丹比丘尼 赞助计划

The Bhutan Nuns sponsorship programme helps to provide food and basic essentials for nuns from 7 nunneries. These nunneries are located in remote areas where the surrounding communities are poor and have limited resources, the nuns are therefore vulnerable as their living conditions are basic and subject to harsh extreme weather from very hot summer to heavy monsoon rains and freezing cold winters. In some cases, poor families send their young daughters to a nunnery hoping that they will be looked after and will receive an education but because the nunneries themselves are struggling, many of the young nuns are undernourished and sometimes they only have one meal a day and even have to share mattresses and blankets.

The nuns sponsorship programme is conducted in collaboration with Bhutan Nuns Foundation.

Bangladesh Children Sponsorship Programme
孟加拉国儿童赞助计划

Since 2012, FFM has established a children sponsorship program and has been supporting children. The children staying in Bangalhalia Agapara Buddhist Welfare Orphanage (BABWO) are children who has lost both parents or lost 1 parent and are from very poor families. Some of the children are also part of the Sangha members.

This children sponsorship programme helps to provide food and basic essentials for the children staying at BABWO, a non-profit charity which runs a welfare home for orphans, destitute and disadvantaged children. BABWO is located in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. This area is very poor with political unrest and armed conflicts resulting in unstable living situation and displacement of people in the area. Parents often cannot afford to send their children to school and many children do not have access to education.

With FFM children sponsorship of S$360 per annum per child, the sponsorship allows the children to have 3 meals, clothes and education.
